Coinbase trading bot and API key setup: connect Coinbase safely
Run a Coinbase trading bot with a trade-only API key: what agents can automate, Advanced Trade key setup, a security checklist, fees and troubleshooting.
Short answer
You can connect Coinbase to TradeCorgi with a trade-only API key, so an agent can place spot orders through Coinbase Advanced Trade on your own account but never withdraw. TradeCorgi rejects any key that can transfer funds, asks you to limit the key to its server addresses, and checks your limits before every order.
What you can automate on Coinbase
Describe a rule in plain words and an agent runs it on your Coinbase spot account, checking the market at most once a minute.
Dip buys
Buy a set amount when a coin falls a set percentage within a window, such as 5% in 24 hours.
Recurring buys
Buy a fixed amount on a schedule, with a rule that pauses buying after a deep fall.
Take-profit and stop-loss
Sell at a set gain or a set loss from your buy price, on every position the agent opens.
Indicator rules
Act on indicator levels such as RSI, alone or combined with price moves and schedules.
On Copilot you get an alert with a link to Coinbase instead, and you place the order yourself.
Create a trade-only Coinbase API key
- Log in to the Coinbase Developer Platform with your Coinbase account and open API keys.
- Create a new secret API key and name it something you will recognise, such as TradeCorgi.
- Choose the View and Trade permissions only. Leave Transfer off: TradeCorgi rejects any key that can move funds.
- Add TradeCorgi's server IP addresses, shown in the app, to the key's IP allowlist.
- Copy the key name and private key into TradeCorgi; Coinbase shows the private key only once. We check the permissions before saving it.
What TradeCorgi checks when you connect Coinbase
- The key can trade but cannot withdraw. A key with withdrawal permission is rejected.
- The key is limited to TradeCorgi’s server addresses, where Coinbase supports it.
- The key works and can read your balances, so the agent knows what it may spend.
- The same checks run again every day. If one fails, your Coinbase agents pause and you are told why.
Keys are encrypted with a key unique to you, and are decrypted only inside the service that places orders.
Security checklist for your Coinbase key
- Create a separate key just for TradeCorgi, so you can delete it without affecting anything else.
- Allow spot trading only. Leave withdrawals and transfers off.
- Turn on IP whitelisting with the addresses shown in the app.
- Keep two-factor authentication on for your Coinbase login.
- Never paste your key or secret into a chat, email or support form.
- Start with a small live budget; in its first week a live agent uses at most 20% of the amount you plan.
- Delete the key on Coinbase if you stop using TradeCorgi.
Coinbase fees
Every backtest and paper trade uses Coinbase’s fee for your account tier and its minimum order size, so a rule that only works before fees never looks good. Your agent pays the same trading fees you would pay placing the orders by hand.

Why traders run agents on Coinbase
Coinbase is the main exchange for crypto traders in the United States and a trusted venue in the EU and many other countries. For the 9-to-5 trader in the US or Europe who trades in the evenings, it is usually where the money already is, so it is where an agent should trade.
TradeCorgi shows US users two exchanges: Coinbase and Kraken. Binance.com, Bybit and OKX's global exchange do not serve US users, so they never appear there.
Coinbase's own agent tools, and where TradeCorgi fits
In June 2026 Coinbase launched Coinbase for Agents, which lets AI agents trade on Coinbase accounts. Like the other exchange platforms that opened to agents in 2026, it is built for developers, covers one exchange, and leaves the hard questions to you: how much an agent may lose, and why it traded.
TradeCorgi answers those questions without code:
- Limits the agent cannot cross. Budget, stop-loss, daily loss limit and open positions are checked before any order reaches Coinbase.
- A written reason for every trade, and for every time the agent stayed out, in plain words.
- Backtests with Coinbase's fees for your tier and its minimum order sizes, next to simply holding the coin.
- Paper first. Every strategy runs on virtual money with live Coinbase prices before it can go live.
Fees matter more on smaller orders
Coinbase Advanced Trade charges a fee on each order, set by your fee tier, and accounts that trade less usually pay a higher rate. For an agent that places many small orders, fees can decide whether a rule makes or loses money. That is why every TradeCorgi backtest includes the fee on every simulated buy and sell, and why a rule that only works before fees never looks good on screen.
If a rule trades often, try fewer, larger orders, or a weekly recurring buy instead of frequent dip buys, and compare the two backtests after fees.
A worked example on Coinbase
A typical evening trader's rule: "Buy $40 of ETH every Monday morning, and pause buying if ETH is 15% below my average price." Your Corgi asks what to do if ETH falls a lot, you pick the pause, and you confirm the strategy card. The backtest runs on Coinbase's ETH history with Coinbase's fee for your tier.
Live, the agent places the Monday order on your Coinbase account while you are at work, and you read the decision log in the evening. This is an illustrative example, not a real result.
Who Coinbase suits on TradeCorgi
- Traders in the United States, where Coinbase and Kraken are the two exchanges TradeCorgi supports.
- Traders in the EU who prefer a regulated, well-known venue.
- Long-term buyers running recurring-buy rules with a safety stop.
Before you connect
Run your strategy on paper first. When you go live, the agent trades on your own Coinbase account with the amount you allow, and in its first week it uses at most 20% of that amount. One tap pauses the agent; "Pause and close" also sells its open positions at market price on Coinbase.
How a live agent behaves on Coinbase
Paper first
Every strategy runs on paper with Coinbase’s live prices before it can trade real money.
Limits before every order
Budget, stop-loss, daily loss limit and open positions are checked before each order reaches Coinbase.
A reason for every trade
The decision log records the rule behind each order and the price Coinbase actually filled it at.
One tap to stop
Pause an agent, or pause it and sell its open positions at market price on Coinbase.
Troubleshooting
- The key was rejected when I connected it
- The key most likely has withdrawal permission, or no trading permission. Create a new key with spot trading only and try again.
- The connection fails after I added IP whitelisting
- Check that every address shown in the app is on the key exactly, with nothing else. A missing address blocks some requests.
- My agent paused and says the key failed
- The key was deleted, expired or changed on Coinbase. Your funds and positions stay on Coinbase. Connect a new key to resume.
- My agent paused during maintenance
- Agents pause when Coinbase is under maintenance or prices are more than 2 minutes old, and tell you why. Check Coinbase’s status page, then resume.
- My agent paused with a position mismatch
- The agent’s record no longer matches your Coinbase account, for example after a trade placed by hand on the same coin. Review the positions, then resume.
- An order was skipped as too small
- Coinbase sets a minimum order size for each market. Raise the amount per order in your strategy card.
Coinbase questions
Can TradeCorgi withdraw from my Coinbase account?
No. A key that can transfer or withdraw funds is rejected when you connect it and on every daily check. Your funds stay on your Coinbase account.
Can I use TradeCorgi with Coinbase in the United States?
Yes. Coinbase is one of the two exchanges TradeCorgi shows to US users, with Kraken.
Do agents trade on Coinbase or Coinbase Advanced Trade?
Agents place spot orders through Coinbase Advanced Trade, Coinbase's trading platform with an API for apps, on your own Coinbase account.
What happens if I delete the key on Coinbase?
Your agents on Coinbase pause and tell you the key failed. Your funds and open positions stay on your Coinbase account.
Can agents trade futures on Coinbase?
No. Agents trade spot only, with no leverage, on every exchange.
Why use TradeCorgi instead of Coinbase for Agents?
Coinbase for Agents is a developer toolkit for one exchange. TradeCorgi adds hard loss limits checked before every order, a written reason for each trade, backtests with fees, and agents across exchanges, without code.
